Reasons Families Make the Switch
Wyoming is one of the most straightforward states in the country for homeschooling. Families who provide a basic instructional program at home face minimal state oversight, which gives them broad latitude over curriculum, schedule, and pacing. That freedom serves many families well through elementary and middle school. As students advance into high school and begin thinking seriously about college or career, the calculus often shifts.
A diploma issued by a Wyoming-accredited public school carries weight that an informal homeschool record does not. Access to certified teachers in every subject, including advanced coursework in science, math, and electives, opens academic doors that a single parent cannot easily replicate alone. And having a school community with live instruction, peer interaction, and structured expectations shapes the habits students need to succeed after graduation.
Virtual Preparatory Academy of Wyoming delivers all of that through a fully online format, at no cost to Wyoming families. For parents asking how to switch to online school without losing the home-based environment their student thrives in, VPA Wyoming is a clear path forward. How Enrollment Works in Wyoming
Under Wyoming Statutes Title 21, Chapter 4, Wyoming's compulsory education law allows parents to provide a "basic program" of educational instruction at home as an alternative to public school enrollment. Wyoming does not require home-educating families to register with their local school district or submit a formal declaration of intent. This means there is no state-level withdrawal paperwork to complete when a family decides to enroll in a public charter school. Families apply to VPA Wyoming directly.
Wyoming's compulsory attendance law applies to children ages 7 through 15. Families with students in this age range should apply to VPA Wyoming promptly when switching to ensure continuous enrollment coverage.
To enroll at VPA Wyoming, students must be Wyoming residents in grades K through 11. Kindergarten students must meet standard age eligibility requirements for the enrollment year. Required documents include a birth certificate, proof of Wyoming residency, and current immunization records or a valid waiver. Students entering later grades may be asked to provide prior academic records to support the grade placement review.

Transferring Credits and Records
Wyoming does not maintain a uniform statewide policy for transferring homeschool credits into the public school system. Each school evaluates prior learning individually. At VPA Wyoming, the enrollment and counseling team reviews any academic documentation the family brings to the placement conversation.
Because Wyoming homeschool families are not required to submit annual assessments or maintain records on any particular format, the documentation families have varies widely. Some families have organized curriculum records and completed coursework portfolios. Others have kept informal logs. Both are worth bringing. The counseling team works with what you provide and makes grade placement decisions based on the full picture of what your student knows and where they are ready to go next.
For families asking how do you switch to online school and make sure prior work is considered, the short answer is this: bring whatever you have and have the conversation with the team. The goal of the credit review is to place your student accurately, not to start them over.
What Students Can Expect in Online Public School
VPA Wyoming follows a Monday-through-Friday school calendar with a structured daily schedule built around live instruction and independent coursework. Wyoming-certified teachers lead every course. Live sessions are interactive and recorded, so students who miss a class or need to review material can access it after the fact.
Wyoming public school students, including those enrolled in online charter schools, are expected to meet state academic standards. VPA Wyoming's curriculum is aligned to Wyoming standards, and students participate in required state assessments. Families monitor student progress, grades, and attendance through a guardian Canvas dashboard that provides real-time access throughout the school year.
Teacher Support
Every VPA Wyoming course is led by a Wyoming-certified teacher who specializes in online instruction. These educators build real relationships with students through daily live sessions, individual progress monitoring, and one-on-one support through breakout rooms. Students who need additional reinforcement have access to enrichment periods during the week where they can connect directly with their teacher. Each family is also assigned a dedicated Success Coach who serves as the ongoing point of contact between the family and the school.
Live and Structured Independent Study
VPA Wyoming combines scheduled live instruction with independent asynchronous coursework throughout each week. Students are active participants in their live sessions, not passive viewers. They ask questions, engage with material alongside peers, and receive real-time feedback from their teachers. Between live sessions, students complete assignments, projects, and practice activities that reinforce and extend what was covered in class. All coursework carries clear due dates, which builds the time-management skills students will rely on in college and career. Explore VPA Wyoming's course offerings on the VPA Wyoming academics page.
Student Activities
VPA Wyoming students participate in virtual clubs and extracurricular activities organized by the school throughout the year. Field trips and in-person school events give students opportunities to connect face to face with classmates and teachers beyond the digital classroom. Students who want to compete in athletics may do so at their local resident school with district approval.
Tips for a Smooth Transition
Because Wyoming does not require a formal homeschool withdrawal process, families can move directly to the VPA Wyoming enrollment application. Before submitting, gather whatever academic records you have. Completed curriculum, reading logs, assessments, and any prior grades or evaluations all support the placement review.
Set a consistent daily schedule before the school year begins. Wyoming does not prescribe a specific instructional hour requirement for online public school students, but VPA Wyoming follows standard public school attendance expectations with daily live sessions and assignment deadlines. Students who establish a morning routine before day one tend to transition more smoothly.
Attend orientation before the first day. VPA Wyoming walks families through Canvas, attendance tracking, communication with teachers, and how to use the school-issued Chromebook. Access the school calendar and onboarding materials on the VPA Wyoming parent and student resources page.
