At Virtual Preparatory Academy of Wyoming, instructional hour expectations increase as students move through grade bands, from roughly 900 hours a year in the earliest grades to closer to 1,000 hours by high school. That structure means a student's daily routine should evolve as they grow, rather than staying the same year after year. With 26 credits now required for graduation, building strong organizational habits early makes a real difference over time. These virtual learning tips for parents focus on how to support that structure at each stage of a student's education.
Because instructional hour expectations at Virtual Preparatory Academy of Wyoming grow substantially from the earliest grades through high school, families often find that the routine they use for a younger student simply will not carry over once that student moves into a higher grade band.
Tip #1: Create a Dedicated Learning Space
A student's workspace often needs to grow right along with them as they move from one grade band to the next, since the demands of a shorter school day look different from those of a longer one. It does not need to be elaborate, just quiet and used the same way each day.
Keep the school-provided Chromebook, a charger, headphones, and any needed materials within reach so a student can begin their instructional time without delay.
Because daily hour expectations grow with each grade band, some families find it useful to revisit a student's workspace setup annually, since a space that worked well for a shorter school day may need small adjustments as expected hours increase.
A detailed setup checklist is available on the school's parent and student resource page, which outlines what students need for a successful learning environment at home.
Tip #2: Establish a Consistent Routine
As the hours a student is expected to spend in school lengthen at each new grade band, a routine that worked well in elementary school may not stretch far enough to cover a middle or high school day.
A steady wake-up time and a clear start to the school day help students transition into learning mode, particularly as their expected daily hours increase in later grades.
Instructional hour expectations increase with each grade band, so families often need to revisit a student's daily schedule at the start of every school year to make sure it still matches current requirements.
Tip #3: Encourage Organization and Time Management
Twenty-six credits now stand between a Wyoming student and graduation, and instructional hours that grow year over year make organization increasingly important as a student moves up in grade level. A quick daily check of the Canvas dashboard helps keep coursework from piling up.
Using Calendars and Planners
A shared calendar that tracks live sessions and deadlines helps students see their week clearly, which becomes especially useful as expected instructional hours increase in later grades.
Setting Daily Goals
A specific goal, such as completing one subject's work before a break, gives students something achievable to work toward as their daily hour expectations grow with each grade band.
For families tracking progress toward the newly approved 26-credit graduation requirement, an early conversation with a counselor can help clarify exactly how the updated requirement applies to a student's specific timeline.
Tip #4: Stay Connected With Teachers
Weekly check-ins between students, teachers, and peers give parents a natural opening to ask questions as instructional expectations increase through the grade bands.
A short message about how a student is adjusting to a new grade band's expectations helps keep communication open throughout the year.
Expectations shift from grade band to grade band, so asking a teacher directly what has changed compared to the previous year can help families adjust routines with less guesswork.
Tip #5: Minimize Distractions
As daily instructional hours grow with each grade band, protecting focus during that time becomes more important. Turning off notifications during live sessions and keeping the learning space separate from entertainment both help.
Older students working toward higher instructional hour requirements often benefit from setting their own boundaries around screen use and break times.
As daily hour requirements grow with each grade band, distraction management becomes an increasingly important skill, since even small interruptions add up differently across a longer instructional day.
Tip #6: Support Healthy Habits and Breaks
As instructional hours increase from grade band to grade band, regular breaks become even more important for sustaining focus. A short walk or a few minutes of movement between sessions can help.
Consistent sleep and mealtimes support a student's ability to meet the growing daily hour expectations that come with each new grade band.
Older students face significantly higher instructional hour requirements than younger ones, so families may find that break strategies that worked in elementary school need to be adjusted as a student moves into middle and high school.
Because instructional hour expectations grow substantially from one grade band to the next, some families find it useful to sit down with a student at the start of each school year and walk through exactly what the new hour requirement means for their daily schedule, rather than assuming the previous year's routine will simply carry over unchanged.
Tip #7: Encourage Independence
Checking their own Canvas dashboard and managing their own daily goals gives students real responsibility for their own schedule as instructional hour expectations grow.
Building this independence gradually, starting with smaller decisions and expanding over time, helps prepare students for the increased time commitment of later grades.
As instructional hour expectations grow, encourage students to take a more active role in planning their own day, which becomes especially valuable once they reach the higher hour requirements of the upper grades.
Additional Strategies for Virtual Learning Success
Because instructional hour requirements grow as students move from elementary through high school, families can expect a student's daily routine to evolve over time. Staying attentive to these changes, rather than assuming a single routine will work for years at a time, helps keep expectations realistic. Staying attentive to these shifts is central to how parents can support students in online schooling as expectations grow.
With the recently board-approved 26-credit graduation requirement now in place for the 2026-2027 school year, families of current students may want to confirm with a counselor how the updated requirement applies to their student's specific graduation timeline.
Because instructional hour expectations at Virtual Preparatory Academy of Wyoming grow meaningfully with each grade band, families who revisit their routines regularly tend to adapt more smoothly than those who assume one approach will work for years at a time.

FAQs
How can parents support virtual learning at home?
Parents can help by adjusting routines to match their student's current grade band, setting up a consistent workspace, and staying in touch with teachers as instructional expectations grow. Because expectations grow with each grade band, revisiting routines every year helps keep pace with current requirements.
What are the best routines for online students?
The best routines reflect a student's specific grade band, since instructional hour expectations increase from elementary through high school at this school. Consistency within a student's current grade band matters more than matching a previous year's routine exactly.
How involved should parents be in online learning?
Parents are most helpful when they adjust their level of support as a student moves through grade bands, gradually allowing more independence as instructional hours and credit requirements increase. This balance also gives families room to step back as a student takes on more responsibility in later grades.
What tools help students stay organized?
A shared calendar, short daily goals, and regular use of the Canvas dashboard help students manage a workload that grows heavier with each grade band. A steady daily habit of checking Canvas each morning prevents small tasks from piling up as hour requirements grow.
How can parents keep students motivated?
Specific daily goals that scale with a student's grade band, regular breaks, and recognition of progress all help keep students motivated as expectations increase. Recognizing steady effort at each new grade band, not just the transition itself, helps sustain long-term motivation.
